Product Manager is a job in which Nele Janssens is able to combine both her passion for IT and finance with her skills and knowledge. Above all that, she strives for constant innovation, catering to the fields’ newest developments, regulations and client needs. With 12 years of experience at Dynatos, Nele is the expert on e-invoicing platform Routty. She shares her views of past, present and future.
How did Routty come into existence?
“Routty started out as a project and grew into a platform. We created a tool to send e-invoices to the government. This was necessary because of the new regulations at the time. Here, we saw an opportunity to create a platform out of this tool. It evolved into the Routty we know now, where you can send and receive invoices and other electronic documents, but also process these by controlling and matching them. We always strive to create a touchless process with as little human interaction as necessary. – that is automation.”
Automation takes time and patience. But it also creates time!
For the last 10 years, you have been working on creating awareness and urgency of e-invoicing. Why?
“What surprises me is that many don’t see the added value of electronic documents. It’s more efficient and safer. I want to see developments as opportunities instead of threats. I know change can create stress or worries; that is something to keep in mind. Don’t underestimate such consequences. But I believe in trying to make processes as simple as possible, even with new and ever-changing rules and regulations. Automation takes time and patience. But it also creates time! E-invoicing diminishes repetitive tasks and provides extra hours for the more strategic work that needs to be done. Helping our clients in this mindset change is an essential part of our work.”
Today, you are Routty’s product manager. What makes you do what you do?
“My current job allows me to connect with, as well as create for my clients. I used to be a consultant, then I became project manager. Now, I work as an all-round product manager for Routty. I do some marketing, provide training and presentations, look for ways to innovate, visit events and conferences, and discuss our next steps with partners, consultants, and sales. When you think of Routty, at Dynatos, many think of Nele. Together with my coworkers, I was there from the start: I know the market and, therefore, what needs to get done. That allowed me to be very involved with Routty’s development. It makes me happy to see that our product is appreciated and is growing and improving every day.”
Being part of Routty from the beginning means I know exactly what needs to be done to keep us moving forward.
What do you still want to learn?
“Something we, as Team Routty, are working on is to make Routty its own platform, instead of “our” platform. We want our partners to be able to work with it independently. When questions related to Routty arise, they find me immediately. I enjoy giving information and explanations especially when it is about my passion! However, I want to spend the majority of my time on strategic tasks, instead of technical questions. That is why we are working on clear documentation on Routty. It’s always a challenge to find the balance between providing people with detailed information and documentation and making the text easy to read and not too long. By doing this, I strive to distribute knowledge on Routty to both consultants and programmers, so we can all be trusted advisors. Then my work circles back to ensuring that Routty is relevant and in tune with the market.”
So, your priority is strategic work. What is your priority for Routty as a platform?
“Our focus is on compliance. The industry is ever-changing, and so are the e-invoicing regulations. We support our clients in ensuring they comply with all regulations in the different countries they operate in. E-invoicing is an important and continually recurring topic: it affects the receiving, sending, and processing of documents, and therefore, the different e-invoicing regulations influence the platform itself. That makes it important to improve and adjust Routty’s user functionalities constantly. Here, my experience and knowledge of both the industry and the product come in handy. We want to provide our clients with a platform that is future-oriented and up-to-date with the newest technology. I strive for the ultimate combination of simplicity and possibility”
